- Life Support -
9/2/2010 Democratic Party of Wheatland Township
It was just about a year ago that we were hearing stories about President Obama's intention to escalate the war in Afghanistan. Again. The president's most ardent defenders insisted that we shouldn't listen to unnamed and anonymous sources, and should instead wait and see what happened. And then when he escalated, pretty much as had been reported, we were told that it was the right move, and we should support it. The same dynamic played out with the public option. For months, while it became increasingly apparent that the president wouldn't fight for a public option, we were told that he kept saying he supported one, and we didn't know what was going on behind the scenes. When the public option was punted, we were told that it never had been all that important, anyway, and the health insurance bill that was passed was all kinds of wonderful, so we should just be appreciative and grateful.
- Krugman: It’s Witch-Hunt Season -
8/30/2010 Democratic Party of Wheatland Township
The last time a Democrat sat in the White House, he faced a nonstop witch hunt by his political opponents. Prominent figures on the right accused Bill and Hillary Clinton of everything from drug smuggling to murder. And once Republicans took control of Congress, they subjected the Clinton administration to unrelenting harassment — at one point taking 140 hours of sworn testimony over accusations that the White House had misused its Christmas card list.
- The Illustrated Man-
8/29/2010 Democratic Party of Wheatland Township
Our maddening times demand that the truth be forthrightly stated at the outset, and not just that the president has nothing in common with the führer beyond the possession of a dog. The outlandish stories about Barack Hussein Obama are simply false: he wasn’t born outside the United States (the tabloid “proof” has been debunked as a crude forgery); he has never been a Muslim (he was raised by an atheist and became a practicing Christian in his 20s); his policies are not “socialist” (he explicitly rejected advice to nationalize the banks and wants the government out of General Motors and Chrysler as quickly as possible); he is not a “warmonger” (he promised in 2008 to withdraw from Iraq and escalate in Afghanistan and has done so); he is neither a coddler of terrorists (he has already ordered the killing of more “high value” Qaeda targets in 18 months than his predecessor did in eight years), nor a coddler of Wall Street (his financial-reform package, while watered down, was the most vigorous since the New Deal), nor an enemy of American business (he and the Chamber of Commerce favor tax credits for small business that were stymied by the GOP to deprive him of a victory). And that’s just the short list of lies.
- Estimates Say Fewer Jobs, Larger Deficits if Republicans Were in Charge -
8/29/2010 Democratic Party of Wheatland Township
Nothing is more important to Republican politicians these days than jobs and the deficit—at least according to Republican politicians. As House Minority Leader  John Boehner  put it in a " major economic address " on Tuesday, President Obama is "doing everything possible to prevent jobs from being created" while refusing to do anything at all "about bringing down the deficits that threaten our economy." Elect Republicans in November, Boehner assured his audience, and we will put an end to this insanity.
- Kirk gets $3.4 million campaign boost from Republican committee --
8/28/2010 Democratic Party of Wheatland Township
Mark Kirk's campaign Friday confirmed that the National Republican Senatorial Committee will be committing major funds toward his Senate bid. The committee plans to give Kirk, of Highland Park, $3.4 million in the race against Chicago Democrat Alexi Giannoulias - double the amount usually allowed. The Politico website reported that the committee indicated it would take advantage of a technical ruling in order to commit that much money to the race. U.S. Judge John Grady has ordered two separate elections on the November ballot for the Senate seat, formerly President Barack Obama's.

Beck is a provocateur who likes to play with matches in the tinderbox of racial and ethnic confrontation. He seems oblivious to the real danger of his execrable behavior. He famously described President Obama as a man “who has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture.” He is an integral part of the vicious effort by the Tea Party and other elements of the right wing to portray Mr. Obama as somehow alien, a strange figure who is separate and apart from — outside of — ordinary American life. As the watchdog group Media Matters for America has noted, Beck said of the president, “He chose to use the name, Barack, for a reason, to identify not with America — you don’t take the name Barack to identify with America. You take the name Barack to identify, with what? Your heritage? The heritage, maybe, of your father in Kenya, who is a radical?”
- Will County to welcome new judges in 2011 --
8/27/2010 Democratic Party of Wheatland Township
JOLIET -- Early next year, there will be three new associate judges serving Will County. On Aug. 3, Will County Associate Judge James Garrison announced that he will retire Dec. 30. And two other associate judges -- Bobbi Petrungaro and Robert Livas -- are running unopposed in the November election for positions as subcircuit judges. In Will County, the circuit and subcircuit judges are elected by voters. The associate judges are then chosen by the circuits and subcircuit judges.
- Tainted water claims at Midwest Generation --
8/27/2010 Democratic Party of Wheatland Township
JOLIET -- Environmental groups contend the water around Midwest Generation's Joliet station is being contaminated and state regulators aren't doing anything about it. The local groups and Sierra Club held a rally Thursday in Joliet as part of a national campaign calling for tighter regulations over the disposal of coal ash from power plants. While the groups contend the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is ignoring its own findings of groundwater contamination, an IEPA official said the agency has not found any significant threats to water supplies from the Midwest Generation operations.
- Kirk, Giannoulias agree to Senate debates --

Republican Mark Kirk and Democrat Alexi Giannoulias have agreed to participate in two debates and could hold more. Representatives say the U.S. Senate candidates will face off on Oct. 10 on NBC's "Meet the Press." They've also agreed to participate in the Oct. 19 League of Women Voters' debate on Chicago's WLS-TV.
- Economy has pantry in scramble for donations --

As the economy continues to struggle, so too do many Naperville area residents who never thought they'd find themselves turning to a community pantry to meet their basic needs. But the number of first-time users of the Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry is climbing, said Jody Bender, community relations director for the facility. From July 1, 2008, to June 30, 2010, Loaves & Fishes saw a 220 percent increase in first-time users. Last month, 141 new families signed up, the largest new enrollment since September 2009. During July, groceries were distributed to 5,243 people including 440 single moms, 537 senior citizens and 2,174 children.
- Pradel, Miller still considering run for Naperville mayor --
8/25/2010 Democratic Party of Wheatland Township
Naperville's longest-serving mayor hasn't decided yet, but he has made hints that it might be time to turn in his gavel. "I'm not really announcing that I'm going to run for the mayor yet, but I am intending to pull a packet today or tomorrow," said Mayor A. George Pradel on Tuesday. Petitions for candidacy for the mayor's office and four seats on the City Council were made available in the clerk's office Tuesday morning. The terms of Pradel and council members James Boyajian, Robert Fieseler, Richard Furstenau and Grant Wehrli expire in 2011.
